I am trying to get Backstrom off my friend to be my 3rd goalie. My latest offer is

Dustin Brown and a 5th round pick for Backstrom and a 6th round pick, which he is thinking about.

How much is too much to give up for Backstrom? Should I offer more to ensure I land Backstrom? we use GAA, SV%, W, SHO for goalies

My team:

Hall-Stamkos-Eriksson
Benn-Getzlaf-Selanne
Bourque-M.Richards-Brown
Landeskog-Seguin-Callahan
Brassard

Burns-Bieksa
Zidlicky-Campbell
Babchuk

Lundqvist
Lehtonen
Nabokov
Emery (took both these guys hoping one would pan out, If I get Backstrom I will get rid of these guys)

Since hits is not a factor, I would say DB is fair market value.

What would you guys think of this:

I give:
Mike Richards, Anton Babchuk, 3rd round pick

for
Backstrom (MIN), Kulemin, 1st round pick

We have 6 keepers in our league, and Richards was one of mine last year but I also have Stamkos and Getzlaf at C, and drafted Hall, Benn and Seguin this year who could end up replacing richards maybe. Solidifies my goalies as:

Lundqvist, Lehtonen , Backstrom

Am I giving too much? I like getting a first back for next season

I also like that you're getting a 1st rounder back. I'm not too high on Mike Richards (and this is coming from a lifelong Flyers' fan). The issue I have with this trade relates to goaltending: Backstrom is a bit of a Lehtonen clone when it comes to stats (only less wins). These two guys bring you low-to-mid 0.91x for sv% and mid-to-high 2.xx for gaa.

What kind of options do you have for goalies on free agency? Is there another goalie you could target in a trade (e.g. Halak)?

Well Right now I also have Nabokov and Emery on the bench just in case they steal their jobs. But if Free agency there are only backups (some decent ones like schnieder and Bobrovsky) and Mike Smith.

The guy I am trading with is the only one really selling goalies, because he has 4 (Vokoun, Crawford, Hiller, Backstrom). I have talked to him about Hiller but he is asking for a lot more

I sent out a feeler offer for Fleury with another gm. we'll see what he says

I like Schneider as your 3rd goalie over Backstrom. You're likely to get 20-25 solid starts out of him if he stays with Vancouver (or more if he ends up on another team). With Lundqvist/Lehtonen as your two starters, you're looking at 140 starts potentially. In a categories league like this one, for every start a guy like Backstrom has, he'll be increasing (decreasing) Lundqvist's GAA (SV%).

What about Wins though? I am always tentative to have a backup as my 3rd goalie

Any plausibility to getting Backstrom and Schneider?

This league is H2H if that wasn't clear earlier

Thanks for all your help

Wins are not to be ignored, but let's look at last year's data for a second. MIN won 39 games. In the 50 games that Backstrom started, the team earned him 22 wins. Schneider, who only started in 22 games, notched 16 wins. Schneider also put up .929 and 2.23.

Backstrom was a 30+ game winner three seasons ago. I'm not sure the current MIN team has that ability.

Very insightful Mike. I actually have to agree. When looking at numbers from that perspective, Schneider is easily the better pickup. I also think Mike Smith may fly under the radar a bit. We will see if Bryz was a product of Phoenix's defense or if we was just that good. If he was a product of their defense, Mike Smith could be the sleeper goalie of the year (there is always one). Dave Tippett really likes him too from his time in Dallas. Don't be surprised to see Smith much improved on a weak Phoenix team.

Ended up getting backstrom, but I think I have a deal lined up to flip him for Halak.
