Goalie Primer: Feb 11 – Feb 17

Welcome to the Goalie Primer, our weekly preview of the upcoming fantasy hockey week focusing on goalies. We’ll use this column to point out possible spot starts and waiver grabs for your fantasy hockey roster. All references to potential starts should be considered educated guesses. Full confirmations for starting goalies can be found on our Starting Goalies page. As always, if you want to be alerted by push notification when the status (probable or confirmed) of a goalie on your fantasy hockey roster has changed, consider getting a subscription to our Starting Goalies iPhone App. The App also includes recent line combinations of all 30 NHL teams.

HURRICANES – The Carolina Hurricanes start the week off with a back-to-back, so expect Dan Ellis to get a start on either Monday or Tuesday.

FLAMES – In Calgary, Miikka Kiprusoff is still on IR and so Leland Irving will get the start on Monday. The Flames have four games this week, so Kiprusoff could potentially see three starts if activated on Tuesday. The Sunday game is the front end of a back-to-back, giving them 5 games in 8 days.

STARS – The Dallas Stars have four games this week including a back-to-back on Tuesday/Wednesday. Expect Richard Bachman to get a start in one of these games. Lehtonen was excellent against EDM this past week, so perhaps Bachman will be assigned the Wednesday start. Nilstorp was sent back to the AHL last week.

OILERSDubnyk/Khabibulin owners will want to make a note that the Oilers have only two games this week. Dubnyk is likely to start the Tuesday game, as it would be surprising if the team let him sit for a week.

WILDMinnesota will play four games in seven nights, including a back-to-back to start the week. Expect Harding to play early in the week.

DEVILS – The Devils play 10 sets of back-to-backs this season. Hedberg shutout the Islanders on Feb 3, so don’t be surprised if the Devils go back to him again for the Saturday start.

FLYERSMichael Leighton is injured and will miss 7-10 days. The Flyers have recalled Brian Boucher. With two sets of back-to-back games this week, expect Boucher to get at least one start this week. The Winnipeg game on Tuesday seems like the right spot.

BLUESJake Allen has been returned to the AHL as Jaroslav Halak was activated from the IR today. The Blues have four games in seven nights and you should expect Halak to see the bulk of them given Elliott’s recent performances. Halak will start the week facing the Kings who are putting up a ton of SOG with their newly revamped lines.

SHARKS – The Sharks will start the week with a back-to-back and this seems like a nice spot to give Niemi a rest. Look for a possible Greiss start in the Monday game agains the Blue Jackets.
