Nicklas Lidstrom Retires After 20 Years

After a 20-year career replete with Norris Trophies and Stanley Cup Rings, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom has retired. This announcement does not come as a huge shock given Lidstrom’s age and the state of the Red Wings’ team. The impact will be felt in fantasy hockey leagues as many managers likely held onto Lidstrom through the end of the regular season in an effort to retain him as a keeper defenseman. Moreover, Detroit will likely make a splash in free agency to replace Lidstrom and this could prove beneficial to owners of UFA defensemen such as Ryan Suter or Matt Carle.
