    Stamkos for Howard

    Matchup style league, G,A,+-.PIM,PPP,SHP,GWG,W,GAA,SV%,SHO

Trade is actually Stamkos Reimer for Howard and Filppula

I was thinking of dropping Reimer, and don't really need Filppula so basicly Howard for Stamkos is the deal.

    My team:

    F
    Stamkos
    Thornton
    Fleishmann
    Marleau
    Parenteau
    Eberle
    Nugent
    Hall
    Perron
    D
    Yandle
    Boyle
    Hamhuis
    Wisniweski
    G
    Niemi
    MacDonald
    Reimer

Tough getting rid of Stamkos though, that is a lot of goals.

I am tied for first place. Have been 1st for some time but if SJ doesn't perform it hurts me a lot.

Should mention, Nabokov, Dubnyk, Bobrovsky, Giguere, are all FA's so I have been rotating through them when needed.

There is also the issue as to whether this is a keeper or not. It's hard to justify trading Stamkos for anyone (with the exception of maybe Malkin) 1 for 1. If it's a keeper, it's even worse.

With Nabokov on the waiver wire, and Howard due to come back this week hopefully, I think the play here would be to drop MacDonald for Nabokov. Howard spent 4 seasons in the AHL, and never had stats even come close to what he has this year. I would say his stats are a product of his team and not his play, and that worries me. Detroit had 104 points last year and Howard had bad numbers, and 102 points the year before and he had great numbers. This inconsistent play despite the consistency of his team tells me he's not as good as people think he is, certainly not worthy of Stamkos.

I don't mean to pick on you, but you are doing exactly what the common nhl fan is doing right now. You look at Howard's team and automatically assume he is a product of them. You look at the year before and you automatically assume Howard is streaky. The red wings are a pretty good team, yes. Our defense is SO overrated though. People see the final score of a wings game being 5-4 and they just think the team helped Howard out. This really couldn't be farther from the truth. Howard makes huge saves and allows us to stay in the game. Watch a wings game. Howard has to constantly stop breakaways and odd man rushes. I would actually argue that he helps the team more than they help him. The only major difference between the wings this year and the wings last year (besides White in and Rafalski out) is that Howard stops the ridiculously good scoring chances the defense gives up this year.

Even with that said I wouldn't trade Stamkos for him. Maybe if a little more was added to the Howard side I would, but not straight up.

That's some good advice, if I do drop Mac for Nabokov, any thoughts on Reimer? I am thinking right now if Gustavson shines these next few games Reimer will not be the number 1, and personally would rather Bobrovsky, and/or add/drop Greiss when Back/Back SJ games are played. FYI non keeper League.

Howard wouldn't come cheap, Stammer might be a bit high though, but looking at your goaltending I think it actually might be a wise choice. Howard is a top notch fantasy goalie, it doesn't matter if it's him or his team, he's fantasy gold either way.

If this is a one year league it just may well be worth it.

I hate getting into arguments, but this is why I don't think Howard is as good as people think he is.

    2008-2009 (AHL with Grand Rapids) - 30.1 shots/gm, 2.54 G.A.A. with a .916 SV%
2009-2010 (Howard's breakout year), 29.4 shots/gm and Detroit was 9th in the NHL in shots against
2010-2011 (Down Year), 30.7 shots/gm and Detroit was 16th in the NHL in shots against
2011-2012 (obviously a great year), 27.1 shots/gm Detroit is 3rd in the NHL in shots against

You see that magical number of 30 shots being an issue. The less attention to detail his team pays to defense, the worse his numbers get.

I know quality of shots matters, but over the course of a full season, the sample size is large enough to lend credit to the systems of the team.

Howard's SV% against the other 7 current playoff teams in the West is .922, compared to his .924 overall, not a significant difference.

But against the elite teams (Vancouver, Chicago, San Jose), Howard is 3-4 with an .894 SV%. I don't include Nashville, St. Louis, Phoenix and Los Angeles in that elite category because they don't have the firepower the others do (none of those 4 teams are top-10 in team scoring, and Los Angeles/St. Louis are both in the bottom third). San Jose and Vancouver are both in the top-10 in goals for/game and goals against/game (and Chicago might be if their goalies didn't suck).

There's a reason LA allows 2.07 goals/game, and Detroit allows 2.35, despite LA giving up an extra shot and a half per game. Superior goaltending.

I'm an NHL fan, but not a common one. I watch two games every night, and I've watched several Detroit games this year. Yes Howard is good, but he's not in the Rinne/Quick/Thomas conversation by any stretch, which would be the only goaltenders that could possibly justify trading Stamkos
