    Churning and Burning

My league commish says that churning and burning is despicable. I say we have 50 total adds to use during the season, and I plan on using every one of them to win. Which one of us is right?

Well, if your commissioner doesn't like you using 50 moves, why would he give them? People that use these arguments are just mad because they don't have the time to invest to "churn and burn". In my opinion, utilizing the FA pool takes just as much skill as drafting a good team. I guess, have a look at where you are vs where this person is. If this person is facing you in the championship, then who cares, he drafted well and you utilized the FA pool. That being said, you wouldn't have these things in place if you couldn't use them. If he used any moves at all, he is a hypocrite. That works for some people, not others. However you win, does not matter. I utilized every single move I had. Some pickups turned out to be great as I was able to flip them for skilled guys.

I don't think either of you is right or wrong, it just depends on what works. If you are both in the championship, then you are both right. Do what you have to do to win.

My commish has run this league for 6 or 7 years, while this is only my 2nd year in the league. Last year he somehow managed to trade a lot of his better players for better draft picks and was done drafting by the 16th round, so he obviously had the better team to start the year, and because of that he's only used 14 adds this year. I, on the other hand, had an OK draft and only had 1 starting goalie for most of the year (until I traded for Elliott, who still isn't really the starter), and was forced to use the free agent pool to fill my team with quality players (Moulson, Parenteau, Stepan, Radulov, Kuba). Currently we are up against each other in the semi-finals, so hopefully I can pull out a win.

He used 14 moves, so whether you use 14 or 50, it is all dependant on your needs. There are players that came out of nowhere and there are players that turned out to be duds. You both made it to the same place, hopefully you beat him on the mere fact he is acting like a douche. Tell him not to allow 50 moves if he doesn't want people to use them.

I agree with Rocketman, if you don't want people to use them, then don't give them so many. Lots of whining happens this time of year (and around trade deadline day). It's all a LUCK based game anyway, even if you use 40 moves in the last couple days of the year, there's still the chance that one of those guys flops when you need him most. Also, he is more than capable to churn and burn with 36 moves left of his own. If you do it too much, you're eventually going to have to drop players that you wouldn't want to drop anyway, so it's all relative to the risks you want to take, and when you're willing to take them. If you traded out half of your roster every day, chances are you're going to lose some of those players permanently.

My league has 7 acquisitions a week. The people with the top 4 acquisitions in my league are the 4 teams that made the playoffs. I've made 131 and someone else made 132. From there it goes down to the 3rd highest at 100 and then to the 4th highest at just 25. Guess which teams are in the Championship matchup. (Answer: 131 and 132)

In the end, I think you use whatever the rules allow you to use in an effort to win.

Back in 2003, I was a member of a FH league. It was a points league and they voted on the scoring system. I argued (strongly, but unsuccessfully) against the scoring system they chose (I was concerned that it favored PIMs and Saves way too much). I lost the argument. During the draft, people thought I was crazy because I skipped the usual big names and drafted guys like: Shelley, Jackman, Fedoruk. I chose Marc Denis & Roberto Luongo (2003 version on Florida) as my goalies.

It wasn't too long before people wanted to change the scoring system (after the draft and after the season started). There were claims that I had "taken advantage of the scoring system"... - whatever the hell that means. What was really crazy was that I warned them that PIMs & Saves were being counted too much and yet no one decided to follow my strategy in the draft.

In the end, I won the league in a landslide. 58% of my total points came from two categories: PIMs & Saves (there were 13 categories). I came in dead-last in six of the eight skater categories.

That is a perfect example of utiliIng the system that is laid out in front of you - The system is in place before the draft, if people in the pool are not smart enough to do their own research then they do not deserve to win. I would bet that those who were upset are more upset with themselves.

For me this year - we had the same 50 moves- one guy used all 50 a week after the trade deadline, he is playing for 9th or 10th place. I had 6 left Sunday morning (playing in the semi final's) down 7-5 ( losing the goalie stats - with no way to get anything there) I dropped 6 players Sunday AM and ended up winning the week, with a tie 6-6. Do I care that I wond that way - NO WAY! a win is a win!!!
