    free agency- VAN???

Ok, someone please help me understand. Im not an expert by any means. Vancouver just signed Jason Garrison for 6 years for 27.6 million. 4.6 a year. previously he earned 750k. now, I understand a slight pay increase, new contract, but am i missing something? His stats do not show a 4.6 million line. please someone help me to try to understand what is going on!

    Thank you.

    a) he was signed on July 1 so automatically, he's getting overpaid.
    b) Van lost Salo earlier in the day and other than giving up too many 'extra' millions to sign Suter, they went w/ the 2nd best available D
    c) Garrison was 3rd in goals by a D this year (behind ... Weber and somebody worth noting) and was very likely getting offers from around the league. Mike Gillis/Gilles feels that he's just a late bloomer and that this great jump in production this passed season is nothing of a fluke ... and I assume he sees that playing w/ Brian Campbell will be like playing w/ any Van D w/ the team it has in front of the blue line.

In short, as of now, no the #'s don't make sense but if he has a Karlsson-like season this year, who'll be having the last laugh?

Defensemen in free agency always rake in the bucks. There weren't many solid D options available this Summer overall, but consider the fact that Garrison was 3rd overall in Goals and 2nd overall in PPG last season (defensemen only).

He also is good for 23+ minutes/game and plays significant (and quality) time on both the PP and the PK. Wait until you see you how much money Matt Carle gets and then I think you'll rethink your stance on Garrison's money.

I get that his goals were 3rd, but he had 1 more assist than goals?

I think 4.6 mil a year is a huge gamble on this.maybe 2 mil a year is reasonable?

either way, i hate hockey off-season for many reasons. #1 reason? because there is no hockey right now :-(

EDIT: haha mike. your prolly right. either way, i just look at what some other defensmen are earning, who i consider better, and itds a fraction of what garrison is going to make.

Mike Komisarek who unfortunately plays for my Maple Leafs is making $5.5 mil this year ... and then $3.5 for the next 2.

HE should be a $2mil/year kind of player...

For those that are getting overpaid ... there are always those getting underpaid.

He eats up TOI, although is +/- is not amazing it is a plus. He's more of a stay at home guy. I didn't really know anything about this guy before this years FA period. He's a stay at home guy, not a scorer, so hopefully for Vancouver he helps keep GAs to a minimum.

2 mill is what bottom pairing dmen are going to be paid which Garrison is not. The cap is going up almost every year so the salaries will continue to go up.

I've been reading that it's expected to come down from the 70 mill it's at now.

I've seen this as well and that's why I'm glad the Wings didn't overpay for any players. Well, besides Samuelsson. There's a reason we didn't resign him...3 years of shooting from awful places plus a no trade clause.
