Shea Weber signs 14-year offer sheet with Flyers

Last night Darren Dreger reported that the Flyers have signed Shea Weber to a 14-year, $100+ offer sheet. This signing has been confirmed by the Flyers organization. The Predators have 7 days to match or beat the contract offered by the Flyers. For more information about the situation, check out this Philadelphia Daily News article.

Holy moly. If Nashville doesn't match the offer and Philadelphia locks up Giroux next year, they will be a powerhouse for the next 10 years.

The things is, Nashville is definitely going to match that. Poile has already said he would match any offer.

But does anyone not agree that this whole process is just stupid? I mean here we are getting an offer to the players basically contradicting this exact contract! I mean it seems the owners are asking players to roll salaries back and limit contract length one day - then going out the next and doing what they don’t want in the next deal. I agree that the Preds will match, but should they? If i was the NHLPA, I would just use this as a HUGE bargaining tool.

They might not match this offer as Weber just announced he doesn't want to play in Nashville.

Well that pretty much puts this situation to bed IMO. Do you really want a player on your team who doesn't want to play for you? Even if they do match, do they hold onto him for 1 year and then they have to trade him? I doubt they would get 4 1st round picks out of the deal or similar value. Plus, will Philly be prepared to take on this contract next year or will they have moved on to bigger and better things? Then what?

In my eyes, Shea Weber is going to Philly as much as we fans of Eastern teams (excluding Philly) like it or not.

I do agree this is a huge contradiction to the proposed CBA and the owner's are a bunch of hypocrites in even offering a deal like this after what they presented to the players. Lockout here we come.

Those four first round picks are all going to be in the 25 to 30 range if Philly gets Weber. If they put Weber on the block I'm sure a team would offer twice as much. A lockout could kill the league. I think their smart enough to realize that. I hope so at least lol.

Me too, I do not want a lockout at all. The problem is, if there is, we all still come back, so the NHL is not that scared.

They would most definitely get more value than four, low first round draft picks in a trade a year from now. The problem for Nashville is the money. The parameters of the deal are arranged so that Nashville would have to pay out $27M in the first 11 months of the deal - whether or not they trade Weber a year from now. Nashville's entire payroll last season was $52M.

If I'm Nashville at this point, I work out a trade with Philadelphia involving those four picks (not unlike the Chris Gratton offer sheet from the 90's). Turn it into two picks and two roster players.

I heard that the Preds and Flyers are working on a compensation trade to convince Poile to not match.
