Thread: Which Goalie

    Which Goalie

    I've got the possibility to trade for 1 of 3 goalies and wondering which order I should rank them if more than one party is interested. I already have Fleury locked up but I want a second keeper since they're such a premium in our league. Varlamov, Crawford, Hiller and Anderson.

    We have the following stats for goalies:

    G = 1, A = 1, GA = -.25, PIM = .5, Saves = .1, shutouts = 5, w = 1, OL = 0.25, SL = 0.25

    Wow, well... I'd rank them like so... Crawford, Anderson, Varlymov, and then Hiller.

    Definitely some interesting options. How is your roster set? Is it a daily lineup? Weekly lineup? How many goalies do you start? Tough to answer that definitively without knowing the answers to these questions.

    I'd lean towards Hiller in most circumstances. However, if you start more than one goalie in a weekly lineup league, I might be inclined to have you go with Anderson.

    I know some are concerned about Hiller's health, but I think he'll be fine. Your league rewards goalies who start a lot of games and see a lot of shots. Assuming Hiller is healthy, he is going to do that. I don't see Bishop and Lehner getting many starts from Anderson this year, but next year you'll start seeing the GP number go down. I'm not a believer in Crawford. Some may call last year a "sophomore slump", but I'm not convinced he's that good and will hold the job over Emery. Varlamov is my vote if you want to hold on to someone for the year's to come as I see the Avs turning into a good team. However, they're not that good now and he's still got JSG behind him taking 25-30 starts a year.

    We set rosters once a week and only dress 1 goalie. Crawford like you is the one I'm most iffy about and I was thinking Hiller and Anderson are probably pretty close to being on the same page with their respective teams. With Varlamov I'd be worried like you said about JSG taking up too many games.

    Knowing this, I say with full confidence to go with Hiller. Best case scenario is Hiller is healthy, starts 65-70 games, and the Ducks are a much better. With all of this, you have a 1A/1B situation in net. You can then look at each goalie's schedule and decide which to start.

    I concur with Hiller. After him, I'd go with Anderson, Varly, then Crawford. Are they your only options?

    LOL.. I wish you guys were in my hockey league... Crawford is going to bounce back... big time. Chicago in all honesty under achieved last year... and Kane had the worst year of his career. Chicago will be in the top 4 in the West this year.

    I've been thinking about this for awhile. After the Hawks won the Cup three years ago with an absolutely stacked team they barely made the playoffs the next year. And then they were sixth last year. I'm kinda thinking the 5th - 6th spot is going to be more of their norm instead of it being a bad year. It really depends on how Crawford plays. The defense in front of him was pretty awful last year as well.

    To answer the question I would definitely go with Hiller. He has nobody behind him while Crawford has Emery.

    That's the beauty of the hockey season yet to be played - we don't know what's going to happen. I would agree that Chicago has under-achieved the past two years, but I would also say that Crawford is hard to gauge. He should have a much better year than last year, but I think that puts him around the middle of the league's starting goalies. I'd love to have him as my 3rd goalie, but I doubt he'll last that long in the draft. It kind of depends on Yahoo's default draft rankings (I don't know what yahoo puts those together!).

    As an aside - I'm glad we have this forum to discuss the upcoming season. It really helps me get to know the players and the sentiment of how things might go this year. Thanks LWL!
