    Ward and Bryzgalov

In a keeper league and someone wants to set up a trade around bryz and ward.

I have bryz. The thing is, he seems to think ward is going to have the better season. Does anyone else feel ward is the better goalie and not bryz? I'm not sure I agree.

Stats we use are wins, saves, sv%, GAA, and SHO.

Let me know who will do well at each please and what you think.

Shutouts are guesswork for the most part.

Ward is generally very strong for saves in fantasy hockey.

I expect Bryzgalov to lead Ward in the remaining categories.

I've always considered team defense when trading goalies.. so I would be inclined not to do this trade... although it seems the Flyers are having a hard time keeping their defensmen healthy.. so the stats may reflect that at the beginning of the year.

I think Bryz has the edge in W and GAA; Ward has the edge in SV; the other two categories are up in the air. They're fairly similar in value, so you'd have to look at the other elements of the trade, but I think Bryz has a slight advantage. I have Bryz ranked 6th and Ward 9th, with Hiller and Anderson between them, but they're all very close.

As my avatar would indicate, I should be biased in this thread. However, I would take Bryzgalov given the GAA category.

I think I would prefer Ward over Bryzgalov.

Wins: Due to playing more games than Bryzgalov, Ward only had 3 less wins last year. Carolina definitely improved by adding Staal and Semin. They are solid from line 1 to line 3 now. Philly definitely got worse. They lost Carle, Kubina, and Jagr. They added Schenn, but I don't really think he's ready to be a top pairing guy yet; he's a fringe top 4 imo. Philly will also be without Meszaros for a while. I would give a slight advantage to Ward here.

Saves: As long as Ward keeps getting played as much as he does, he has a big advantage here.

SV%: Advantage Ward here. Even in a pretty awful year by Carolina Ward still managed to put up a respectable .915%. I don't really see Bryzgalov's save percentage significantly rising.

GAA: Advantage Bryzgalov here. I don't think it will be a big difference between the two though.

SHO: Like Mike said, shutouts are pretty hard to predict. However, Bryzgalov has consistently put up more shutouts a year than Ward so he has the advantage here.

You make some good points. Another thing favoring Ward, at least early in the season, is Boucher's recovery time from his injury. I would say they are fairly even in value (Ward and Bryz) and you would really have to look at the other aspects of the trade to assess whether it is a good move or not.
