Hurricane Sandy Reports

Hey guys,

We have all developed somewhat of a relationship and comaraderie here and I just wanted to post this to say that I hope none of you were that affected by Hurricane Sandy. I know it hasn't been easy over there, I know Maryland got it pretty bad, which is where this site has its headquarters. Hopefully since this site is running, that it is safe to saw that the LWL staff is ok. Aside from the few that have already been posting, a quick post noting that you are ok would be great or any stories about it you wish to share.

If you were affected, I hope that you are able to get all of the help you need. I can't do much for your here in Calgary except hope for the best.

Like I said in the league discussion thread, I lost power for a while and pretty far away from it in Michigan...can't imagine how much worse it is down there. Here it's been raining on and off the last two to three days with around 40-50 mph winds. Hope nobody was hurt in this.

That is why I posted this. I like the camaraderie on this website and I would consider most people I talk to regularly on here as friends if we knew each other in person.

My area of Long Island had mandatory evacuations and nobody has been allowed back to assess their damage yet. I live only a block from the water so I know I'm going to have water damage and I expect to be without power for 7-10 days.

At least you are ok. Hope it is not as bad as you think.

Thanks for asking! Patrick is our East Coast resident and let me know that he was lucky enough to not lose power during the storm. I believe his biggest inconvenience was not buying enough ice cream to hold him over.

I'm out on the West Coast. I believe our servers are located in Pennsylvania but we did not experience any downtime due to the storm.

I was watching some of the coverage and was amazed at how flooded NYC was. They will have quite a cleanup ahead.

Glad to hear everything is ok. I watched a lot of coverage and it is never nice to see. I find it amazing with all of the technology we have, how vulnerable we really are. Nature still wins outright no matter what we do.

BUt the technology was the reason eveyone knew this was coming and could predict how bad it would be. IMagine if this had hit and they had NOT taken precautions

Yeah this is huge. Patrick and I were living in Charleston (South Carolina) which is where Hurricane Hugo made landfall as a Category 4 storm. We certainly had advanced warning, but the forecasts and dynamic models have evolved tremendously over the past 20 years.

I remember walking outside when the eye passed over our city. Calm and eery is the best way I can describe it (this was late at night after midnight).

The next morning, it was weird to walk outside and see houses 100 meters away destroyed by trees. Seemed like pure luck as to who got it the worst. Our fence was destroyed and we lost a large bush from the front yard. That was nothing compared to other parts of our neighborhood.
