Last year the league was fine. Only 2 managers were inactive for pretty much the whole year and they finished 15th and 16th. One of the managers that surprisingly didn't return this season made it to the semis last year and had a very good team, not sure what happened there. I'm a guy who loves trading/being active, talking at least, especially now with no hockey. I was referring to the lack of activity since we did our draft this year. I did a few trades with 2 different managers already about a month ago, that's it. I just don't want to feel like I'm talking to a brick wall when I post on our message boards or send trade offers. I'm hoping that once hockey does come back, either this season or next, that the other managers will be active again because I've put a lot of work into this team/league.

I would chalk this up to the lockout. There has been no activity in 6 out of my 8 leagues and only one of them we have not drafted. Even the LWL non-keeper has seen zero activity since the end of the offline draft. I would treat this like a special case, tough to get motivated unless you are a diehard.

I second this. I am prety interested generally but I just cannot really get going on trade talks or whatnot with no hockey
I am focused right now on Christmas, skiing and the world junior. I respond if anyone proposes anything but I am having a tough time doing more.
Bring hockey back and you should see most leagues just explode with activity

Despite all the rhetoric and tactics I would bet the opposite if forced to choose ...... that there will be regular season NHL hockey before September 2013.
I just don't see the remaining issues as enough to keep the sides apart but that said , I do see this as a case where both sides feel they have conceded a lot so now nobody wants to move the last 50 cents

I believe they are close. I know it is is in the long term economic interest of both to do a deal. This isn't a case where you can do a deal ( like buying a car dealership) or simply not do a deal. Only doing a deal makes sense.
But it appears this has become about winning for both sides. I know the NHL has won a lot in this and essentially on their last three issues they have declared that they have to win those too. The PA is in a tough spot. If they could have seen their way clear to accept the NHL's take it or leave it offer, this would be over. I suspect many players would be tempted. But the players countered, trying to "win" something (like an extra year or two toward their position on term and contract length). Since those ARE lesser issues, they probably really expected the NHL to bend on those. Now that the NHL has drawn a hard line, the PA is stuck since any accepting of that "take it or leave it" offer now appears like capitulation. The leadership of the PA would look like idiots to their membership if they accept now the deal they could have had a week ago.
So what is needed is SOMETHING, ANYTHING the PA could trumpet as better than the last take it or leave it deal. But the NHL says (with some justification) " what part of take it or leave it was hard to understand?
So I stand by my assessment. I negotiate a LOT and most negotiations follow a pattern. Early both sides give a lot and each side finds that an economically beneficial deal is possible. Then you get to the hard issues that neither side would compromise on during the first interchange or two. These can be big , sometimes they are very minor in the greater scheme of things. In 95% of cases, one side or the other moves, usually when it becomes the drop-dead issue. In 5% of cases the thing falls apart. ( but often the economic case for doing the dealwas weak for one side thereby making the deal something they didn't want or need this much.) BUt other times you get parties that walk away from each other on what appear to be the most minor of issues
With the NHL an PA the economic case to make a deal is compelling. In fact you would have to be an idiot to not find SOME WAY to salvage a season
